Expand Your Learning

The Spark:
Our seed obsession continues!  During the autumn harvest we snapped this picture (above) showing a group of ladybugs snacking on our favourite snack, apples.  We love the two heart-shaped light beams on the apple as well.  While munching on our apple snack we noticed the seeds inside the apple and, well, since we are obsessed with seeds we wondered if we could possibly plant an apple tree from our apple's seeds and have an unlimited amount of apples to choose from, eat, and share.

Calling all Super Natural Superheroes to ACTIVATE!  Do you love to snack on apples?  Have you noticed the apple seeds inside apples and have you ever wondered if you could plant the seeds to grow and apple tree, this way, you would have an unlimited supply of apples on hand?  Read on...

Start Your Quest:
Why:  To try and unravel the mystery of the apple seed.
What:  To eat apples.  To notice the apple seeds.  To discover what animals eat apples.  To explore the different varieties of apples and to find out which one is our favourite and why.  What is it about apples that we love so much as compared to other fruits?  And finally, can we propagate an apple tree from apple seeds?
Where:  Where ever you are able to pick or plant apples outdoors.
When: As soon as you can get yourself organized.
Who:  You, your family and friends.
How:  Find out below.  It's a S.N.CH., or is it?

Take Action:

1.  Autumn harvest:
We notice apples on trees in the wild and we head out to apple orchards to collect ripe apples from trees.

2.  Remembering the photo of the ladybugs feasting on the apple in the orchard:
As we head outdoors and begin playing and counting dots on the backs of our ladybug friends, we remember that ladybugs love to eat apples and we discuss the image that was taken in the orchard.

3.  The critter habitat:
We places a rock on the uneven side of a larger rock in hopes of finding critters underneath.  On occasion, we lift up the rock to see what we can find.  On this day we noticed some of our ladybug friends scampering around the rock.  Could this be their habitat?

4.  Snacking on apples:
After some lengthy discussions on how ladybugs love eating apples and what other animals would possibly also love eating apples, we decided to snack on some apples that day.  We have become very obsessed with seeds in autumn.  How seeds are dispersed in nature and what seeds we would like to plant.  We noticed the seeds in the apple.

5.  Art class:
We wondered if we could take the seeds from the apple, plant those seeds, and then have an unlimited amount of apples to eat and share.  What animals and critters would climb the tree to eat the apples just like our ladybug friends?

 6.  Sharing:
We took a piece of our apple snack out to the ladybug habitat to see if they wanted to eat it.  Our apple got stolen by some frisky little squirrels.

7.  Planting apple seeds:
After a little research, here is what we found...
