What Would You Say If You Could
Play With A Hover Fly?

The Spark:
Sitting on our morning sit spots in the forest just pondering life, we noticed tiny hover flies landing on flowers all around us. They were doing so in order to take long needed breaks after lengthy periods of practicing the art of hovering in midair, in what seemed like a motionless state, all to attract a female. The hover fly looks somewhat like a tiny bee.  The males hover in midair like fantastic little helicopters, the likes of which we would be hard pressed to see!  Such proficient fliers, these little hover flies are fascinating creatures to observe and play with.

Are you the least bit interested in playing, yes, playing with hover flies as they hover like tiny helicopters in mid air?  Calling all Super Natural Superheroes to ACTIVATE! This quest will truly make you smile and you will learn to appreciate one of the tiniest creatures in nature, the hover fly.

Start Your Quest:
Why:  To engage in play with the tiny creatures that live side by side with us in nature.
What:  To find a sit spot where you can be still, visit frequently, and notice what is going on around you for an extended period of time.
Where: In your backyard or in a nearby patch of nature.
When:  As soon as you can get yourself organized.
Who:  You, your family, and friends.
How:  Find out below.  It's a S.N.CH., or is it?

Take Action:

1.  Plant a pollinator garden:  Hover flies are pollinators so plant a pollinators garden that attracts hover flies.  Include marigolds and daisies as well as other flowers; hover flies just love them!

2.  Find a Sit Spot:  A sit spot  is a spot that you find either in you back yard or in some patch of nature where you can sit comfortably for a while and which is safe enough to return to again.  If you are finding a sit spot in a group make sure you all look out into nature so that you cannot see each other.

3.  Take note of the hover flies, flying around you:  You may notice many creatures and plants around you but for this quest see if you can spot some hover flies.  Extend your hand, if you are patient enough, they will land on your finger.  You may want to sketch them in your sketch book.

4. Play a game with them.  Here is what you will need:

* a straw
* a small pea

5.  Assemble a toy helicopter propeller:  Try your hand at hovering your toy propeller in midair for as long as you can.
