Winter Weather Survival For Cold Weather Fun!

The Spark:
If you look outdoors during the winter time, you can see all of the trees in your neighbourhood just standing there in the snow.  Trees and plants can't run indoors to hide from the cold weather, they can't migrate south to sunny locations, and they certainly can't make a warm soup or throw on some cozy clothes to keep them extra warm during winter.  So, how do they do it?  How do trees and plants brave the winter months and survive?  Are their winter survival tactics the same as ours?  How long do you think you could last if you were standing outdoors, all winter long, without moving, and had no warm clothes on?  I don't think you would last very long.  Plants have adapted over time to brave extremely cold winter weather and survive by creating a type of antifreeze in order to prevent ice crystals from forming inside their cells and to prevent desiccation outside the cells.

We love to get outdoors in the winter time to play.  To keep warm we dress warmly as well as drink warm liquids and soups to keep our body temperatures up and keep us hydrated.  Keeping our bodies moving through physical activity is also extremely important outdoors as it keeps our body temperature warm.  Are you interested in testing you bodies ability to keep warm during winter play?  Let's get outdoors and play during the winter freeze!
