Fresh Snowfall Detectives and
The Mystery of The Abominable Snowman

The Spark:
It is impossible to walk across snow without leaving any tracks.  Did you know that the most mysterious tracks in the snow were photographed in 1951 during an expedition to Mount Everest, in Nepal?  The photographs of the giant footprints were such a mystery that newspaper headlines dubbed the illusive beast which supposedly made the prints "the Abominable Snowman."  During the summer time you really can't tell what creatures scurried across your lawn but, it is totally different during the winter months.  This quest is loads of fun!  When you look out your window after a fresh snowfall and you see tracks all around your lawn, are you tempted to go out on a nature walk and track footprints in the snow?

Let's start this quest by putting on our detective caps and cracking the case of the mystery footprints in the snow.  Are you interested?  If yes, then start your quest to find out more about the secret lives of animals in your neighbourhood that brave the winter.  Start your quest by asking the question WHY?

Oh, BTW:  If you have a BFF, take them with you.  There's strength in numbers.  LOL!

Start Your Quest:
Why:  To follow tracks in the snow, find out how they are made and where they lead to.
What:  To discover what animals in your neighbourhood brave the winter and how they adapt for the cold weather.
Who: You, you friends, family, and your dog.
Where:  Wherever you see tracks in the snow
When:  As soon as you can get yourself organized
How:  Find out below.  It's a S.N.CH.  Or is it?

Take Action:

Find your BFF and ask them if they want to join you in cracking the case of the mysterious footprints in the snow.

On the next fresh snowfall, go on a nature hike with your BFF to see what tracks you can find in the snow.  Photograph them or sketch them.  You may want to set a lure such as placing some peanut butter out to see what animals visit your site and then check the prints the next day.

Find a chart that shows animal tracks that pertain to those in your area and find out what animals are out there.  Game:  You may want to hide a cache and allow your friends to follow your footprints in order to find them.  Try and follow the animal prints to see where they have gone.  Watch out for mystery prints (ones that you cannot identify.)  What do you think the animal looks like that made them?  The Abominable Snowman perhaps?

Did you know that some animals were built to travel in the snow like the Snowshoe Hare?  Some animals adapt as their hoofs and paws.  They expand and grow fur there to create snow shoes in order to disperse their weight to better walk in the snow (the ptarmigan and caribou.)

Here is a fun activity:  How to make emergency snowshoes.  You will need to take some string out with you on your nature walk.

Go snowshoeing with your new snowshoes and your BFFs!
